What happened to Billy the Kid?

I remember three different versions of how the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid died. I grew up knowing that the Kid was ambushed on the road and shot in the back by Pat Garrett, a part-time sheriff's deputy. My confusion began around 1994, when a caller to a late-night radio show said that he remembered the same story, but his college textbook said that the Kid died in prison after being locked up for some twenty years. I did a search on the Internet, and several sites -- including the official Billy the Kid web site, said that he died in prison. A few years later, I mentioned this to my older and smarter brother, and he assured me that Pat Garrett shot Billy the Kid in the back and killed him. So I did another Internet search, and this time the web sites all said that Pat Garrett shot and killed the Kid. A couple years after that, I watched and taped a documentary on the History Channel, in which a group of three or more deputies shot Billy the Kid inside the jail during a shoot-out, when he was trying to break out. Now I am totally confused. Has somebody been tinkering with history? Or have different people told different stories about how it happened? And now I find this on a web site called About Billy the Kid, a fourth version of the same story: "1881, July 14- Late at night in Fort Sumner, the Kid is shot and killed by Sheriff Garrett at Pete Maxwell's house. The Kid was only nineteen or twenty years old." ~~~
